so, what is heart-shaped patch?

great question! i'll tell you in this "brief" explanation.

summary: heart-shaped patch is a live-tweeted project created by myself and my qpp (@kitty-lattee) in early july of 2023. this story stars three main characters; giovanni and matteo lupo, and mark nadeau. matteo and giovanni are played by myself, and mark is played by goose.

characters:

GIOVANNI LUPO (he/him) is a 24 year old alpha male. and if you're on tumblr, i doubt i have to explain what that means. he's a very typical alpha, violent and crude. he also happens to have an issue with alcoholism, which makes his outbursts even worse. in his childhood, giovanni's dad left the family. this led gio to attach to his mother (also an alpha, her name is isabella) further and adopt her bigoted ideals against omegas and betas. which leads us to...

MARK NADEAU (he/she), a 26 (as of september 7th 2023) year old beta gnc transfem. mark is a french-canadian who moved to giovanni's hometown in the state of georgia for college after a family tragedy. the two met at a local church and started dating shortly after. mark is a gentle person, in deep juxtaposition to giovanni's bold and erratic behavior. she takes care of a cat named cassie, a stray he found one day.

MATTEO LUPO (he/him) is a 29 year old omega male. he is giovanni's older brother, and unfortunately the least favorite in their mother's eyes. shortly after turning 24, he moved away from his hometown and went about 2 counties away from the rest of the lupos, cutting contact with them altogether for the bigoted views they display. nowadays, he works in an office and is in a long-distance relationship with ezra becker, who lives in boston.

story:

everything starts when thomas coinin, ex-husband to isabella lupo, leaves the lupo family for good. the change is swift and impulsive, and destroys the lupos forever. the younger brother, giovanni, despises his father for this change. how could he leave like that? he grew closer to isabella to cope with the change. matteo, however, understood his father's decision. he knows what isabella is like, and she's a very prejudiced woman. matteo would distance himself from his mother and giovanni, eventually cutting them off.

meanwhile, mark nadeau returns home to find his entire family gone. their lives were taken by a serial killer. this leads her to a very deep depression, and he impulsively moves to georgia for college, and for some change. in the new state, she meets a 19 year old giovanni lupo.

at the time, giovanni seemed to be a nice guy. he offered mark a home, somewhere to stay while the two went through college together. the two started dating shortly after. an important detail to note is that giovanni was under the impression that mark was an omega. this is why isabella approved of their relationship.

however, one day giovanni noticed something. the two had been together for a few months, and not once had mark gone through a heat. heat suppressants were uncommon and expensive, something that mark couldn't afford without giving up the necessities. he confronts mark about this, only to be greeted with the fact that mark is a beta.

giovanni had spent his entire life hating betas. it's all he's ever been taught. and now his boyfriend is one? he felt enraged. angry. disgusted. nonetheless, giovanni was to protect mark from his mother. she wouldn't know for another few years.

those few years passed, bringing us to the present. mark and giovanni's relationship grew abusive on giovanni's part. he began to be violent towards him, his alcoholism only making his rage worse.

notes:

1) embraces

They all have interesting embraces, it was planned for a long time for Arzel and Lorenzo, so they got out of it kind of shaken but not completely shattered

Arzel served his Sire as a ghoul for 60 years, McAndrew had the idea pretty quickly that he would make a good Childe and slowly prepared him accordingly through the years. They grew to have a decent father/son relationship though still kind of distant bc Victorian era

Enzo's Sire is his aunt Gina, which is a little frown upon within the Giovanni family/clan but nobody really cares too much to say anything. She absolutely HATES Livia (her sister, Lorenzo and Matteo's mother) and she was delighted to find out that Livia hated one of her sons. She made sure Lorenzo would get the attention of the family, giving him the right nudges until she was allowed to embrace him. Lorenzo exceeded all of her expectations so she's very pleased. Livia is absolutely enraged, and now has to stay a ghoul for a long long time before it's her branch of the family's turn to have someone turned into a vampire

Anton was a blood doll, his Sire got a little carried away and felt bad about killing him just for long enough that she decided to embrace him. Then she got kind of bored of him and ditched him

2) Ruth's mother

As I said Arzel was a ghoul for a looong time, and he was persuaded like every other ghouls that ghouls can't have kids. So yeah, he wasn't the most careful. He didn't have his completely carefree slutty attitude yet, he still had stable-ish relationships. Esther was a Nosferatu ghoul he befriended, they had a lot in common. She hid her pregnancy, hid her daughter even from Arzel who was away at that time, so Ruth was already into her twenties when Arzel met her. Esther was killed a few months before Arzel came back to London, he never got to see her again

I wouldn't say that they were in love, but they had a great relationship, he was sad to hear about her death, he had hoped she was just hiding from him bc he's not a ghoul anymore

3) Vampires inspiration

All my OCs spring fully formed from my brain

Though I have to admit I grabbed some cool concepts and mostly I REALLY wanted to go "fuck the lore"

Anton is a Malkavian who can't use the two main powers his clan is known for + I thought the concept of the church of caine was cool

Arzel is a Ventrue, the Blue Blood clan, but he grew up on a farm and was a sailor for a while then a thug + the concept of Ventrue warlords bringing him closer to the Brujah clan at first glance

The Giovanni family is reactionary (lol) so I was like, I'm going to make a trans gay ace Giovanni and nobody can stop me. Then I was like hey, what if the Giovannis actually acted like a fucked up family with country side levels of european family drama and it went downhill from there, the clan is a (very) dark comedy telenovela now

gahhh !!! “signora giuno”?!! being addressed like this makes me feel like i should be looking after my son while secretly helping my husband run his criminal organization!! 

and yes, of course!! this will be a fun exercise for me. getting requests to do a character profile for an OC in Business Before Pleasure is so exciting!! I’m going to assume that we’re going to model this character chart after the ones in the manga? 

if so, I shall continue! without further ado:

maybe it’s because I initially based Don Vittorio on Don Corleone in The Godfather Part II, but I always picture Robert De Niro whenever I write him, except he has a mustache, really dark gray hair (he dyes it black every so often) and very tanned skin. 

Birthdate: 17 August 1944 (he’s a Leo! get it?? because he was born in CorLEOne?? i’ll shut up now)

Death date: December 2008 (haven’t found a specific date, but he’s 64 years old when he passes)

Blood type: AB

Height: 185cm (… yes, he is shorter than his son-in-law Giorno, who has shot up to the height of 195cm)

History: Don Vittorio was born in a very poor family and grew up in Corleone. Eventually joins the local gang at the age of 20 with his distant cousin, Matteo Barese. A few years later, he decides to pull a bloody acquisition and oppose his boss, who is very unpopular with the locals, treats his men like disposable pawns and threatens Vittorio’s parents. Goes to Calabria and asks the boss of the ‘Ndrangheta, Don Arnaldo Oscuro for an alliance; seals it with a marriage pact and marries Arnaldo’s sister. Quickly takes over his faction in Corleone and moves on to take over the bigger and powerful gang in Palermo. The other factions fall in line after and swear themselves to the new boss. Subsequently named the “capo di tutti capi” (or “boss of all [the] bosses”) for uniting all of the small factions in Sicilia into one large organization. In comes the new era for Cosa Nostra.

((You might notice that this acquisition/backstory is a slight nod to Don Corleone taking over Hell’s Kitchen and killing Don Fanucci in The Godfather Part II as well as Robert’s Rebellion and Aegon’s Conquest in A Song of Ice and Fire))

Hailed as a conquerer among his men and just like Don Corleone in The Godfather, opposes narcotics, but not for the reason you might think! Don Vittorio thinks narcotics will make politicians less inclined to work with him, so that’s the main reason he decides to push them away from his own gang. He doesn’t think that narcotics are any different from illegal gambling in terms of its effects on people—understands that both do plenty of harm. 

Eventually has one son, named Santino, who dies at the age of 22 (along with his wife, son and mother), thanks to Passione. Meets the reader around 1992, when she is approx. 8 years old and takes her in as his daughter soon after.

Personality: Solemn, intelligent and pragmatic, which ultimately helped him become a boss at a fairly young age (mid 20′s). Losing many family members due to Sicily’s violent and chaotic living conditions has made him very protective of his own family and dearest subordinates. He is the one responsible for coining the motto that every single one of his men follow: “famigghia obbricu, unuri.” Charming, distant and polite to most, but with his family—and especially his daughter—Vittorio is a very loving person. He’s not someone you want to mess with, but if you want to hurt him where it counts, you should probably go after his daughter… just hope you can live to tell the tale if you’re stupid enough to try and hurt her.

Favorite book: I Malavoglia by Giovanni Verga

Favorite movie: La Dolce Vita (1960)

Likes: Sicilian lemons (Don Vittorio actually owns his own citrus grove in Palagonia, Sicilia), Natale (because he gets to spend time with family!), studying history, listening to classical music, spending time with his daughter Y/n and his grandson Giuseppe 

Dislikes: People who eat pizza with a knife and fork, men who try to talk to his daughter, spending money (except when it comes to his daughter/the wedding)

Today in Italy is the anniversary of the death of the magistrate Giovanni Falcone, his wife Francesca, also a magistrate, and three police officers and their bodyguards: Vito Schifani, Rocco Dicillo and Antonio Montinaro.

They lost their lives in a mafia attack called "Strage di Capaci" (the Capaci bombing), which took place on the A29 motorway at 17:57 in 1992.

I'm not writing this post to teach history or even for a sudden poetic surge of melancholy. I'm writing because I see more and more often on socials like this one an attitude of romanticization of the mafia, often also by cosplayers and people that I esteem so much and that I find inspiring and that I don't want in any way to offend. Surely these people create their content knowing what they are talking about but maybe some of their followers base their knowledge on these AU or on comics read or other conjectures. So I want to talk to these people who maybe think that mafias are not a totally negative thing.

I understand that abroad there may have remained an image of the mafia like Al Capone or similar... of men of other times, criminals of course, but with values like, for example, the untouchability of women and children. Perhaps (I am not an expert on the subject, so it may be possible) in the past organized crime had a sort of ethical code; but, if it ever existed, it hasn't existed for a very long time. Because the mafia, the real one, the one that still terrorizes countries in the south but also in the north of Italy, kills men, women and even children indiscriminately.

It kills men who fight for the freedom of the state and for legality, like the magistrates Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino.

It kills boys like Giuseppe (Peppino) Impastato, a young journalist and activist in his early thirties who rebelled against Cosa Nostra, because he believed that the terrified Sicilian people could be freed from this scourge.

It kills women like Graziella Campagna and Emanuela Loi. The first "guilty" of having collaborated with the justice system for the arrest of a fugitive mafia man, discovering his identity by chance while doing her job as a laundress; the second one, instead, was one of the first women policeman of the bodyguard service, entrusted to the protection of Borsellino and, like him, blown up outside a building in the Strage di Via D'Amelio (Via D'Amelio bombing).

It kills kids like Giuseppe Di Matteo, kidnapped at the age of 12, held hostage for more than a year, then killed and dissolved in acid just because he was the son of a repentant boss.

It kills children like Mariangela or Noemi who were just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

It kills people on the street just because he looks like a member of an enemy clan and therefore "uups, wrong person".

The mafia here in Italy is serious. Despite the fact that some young people answer "it's not here in my house, so I don't care" it's a disease that seems incurable, worse than Covid19.

It's not only about southern Italy as many people think, the small town where I live is one of the (minor) centers of the mafia in the north of the peninsula, just 10 years ago there were arrests and "gambizzazioni" (shooting another person in the legs as a warning or a gesture of revenge) just behind my house.

So, please, however imaginary "the Boss" may have his charm, don't make him pass for the misunderstood one, the one who in the end does good even though he bypasses the law because in this way you only spit on all the dead, as you would do if you would excuse the perpetrators of the massacres in schools or other kinds of attacks.

With this I'm not saying that in Italy we have to pay attention to every dark alley or similar (I mean, in those cases you have to pay attention wherever you are, but not because of the mafias). Ours is a wonderful country with a unique history and culture that can't be found anywhere else, as well as all the cultures of this world; so, once this mess with Covid19 is over, come and take a tour and enjoy the beautiful cities like Naples, Rome, Turin, Florence and Bologna or see the wonders of our Alps or beaches.

As a fangirl and a cosplayer I love good AU's and the creation of original and eye-catching OC's... but the important thing is to be able to distinguish fantasy from reality.

I know that not many people will have read all this post and many will have found it heavy and boring but I invite you to do some research, even just type on google "Strage di Via D'Amelio" and "Strage di Capaci" which are the most sadly famous. Look at the photos. Look how they destroyed roads to hit a single man, in both cases. Then you can go back to cosplaying and writing and reading fanfiction, you have every right but at least you will do it with more awareness.

 P.s: This applies to all mafias, both Italian and foreign.

 P.p.s: Since English is not my native language and I have never studied it so much, I hope I haven't made too many mistakes and that the sense of the post is still clear.

Hanno perso la vita in un attentato mafioso che prende il nome di Strage di Capaci, avvenuto nel tratto autostradale A29 alle 17:57, nel 1992. Non scrivo questo post per insegnare la storia e neanche per un improvviso slancio poetico di malinconia. Sto scrivendo perchè vedo sempre più spesso su social come questo un atteggiamento di romanticizzazione della mafia, spesso anche da parte di cosplayer e persone che stimo tantissimo e che trovo d'ispirazione e che non vorrei in nessun modo offendere. Sicuramente queste persone creano i proprio contenuti sapendo di cosa stanno parlando ma magari alcuni loro follower basano le proprie conoscenze su questi AU o su fumetti letti o altre congetture. Voglio quindi parlare a queste persone che magari pensano che le mafie non siano una cosa totalmente negativa.

Capisco che all'estero possa essere rimasta un'immagine della mafia tipo Al Capone o simili... di uomini d'altri tempi, criminali certo ma con dei valori come, per esempio, l'intoccabilità di donne e bambini.

Forse (non sono un'esperta in materia quindi può essere possibile) in passato la criminalità organizzata aveva una specie di codice etico; ma, se mai c’è stato, non esiste più da tantissimo tempo.

Perchè la mafia, quella vera, quella che terrorizza ancora paesi del sud ma anche del nord Italia, uccide indistintamente uomini, donne e perfino bambini.

Ammazza uomini che combattono per la libertà dello stato e per la legalità, come i magistrati Giovanni Falcone e Paolo Borsellino.

Ammazzano ragazzi come Giuseppe (Peppino) Impastato, un giovane giornalista e attivista appena trentenne che si ribellava contro Cosa Nostra, perchè credeva che da questa piaga il popolo siciliano terrorizzato si potesse liberare.

Ammazzano donne come Graziella Campagna e Emanuela Loi. La prima "colpevole" di aver collaborato con la giustizia per l'arresto di un mafioso latitante, scoprendo l'identità dell'uomo per caso svolgendo il proprio lavoro di lavandaia; la seconda, invece, è stata una delle prime donne poliziotto del servizio scorte in Italia, affidata alla scorta di Borsellino e, come lui, saltata in aria fuori da un palazzo nella Strage di via d'Amelio.

Ammazzano ragazzini come Giuseppe Di Matteo, rapito a 12 anni, tenuto in ostaggio per più di un anno, poi ucciso e sciolto nell'acido solo perchè figlio di un boss pentito.

Ammazzano bambini come Mariangela o Noemi che si trovavano solo nel posto sbagliato al momento sbagliato.

Ammazzano gente per strada solo perchè somiglia a uno appartenente ad un clan nemico e quindi "uups, persona sbagliata".

La mafia qui in Italia è una cosa seria. Nonostante alcuni giovani rispondano "non c'è qui a casa mia, quindi non mi interessa" è una malattia che sembra incurabile, peggio del Covid19.

Non riguarda solo il sud Italia come molti pensano, il paese dove abito è uno dei centri (minori) della mafia al nord, solo 10 anni fa ci sono stati arresti e "gambizzazioni" giusto dietro casa mia. Riguarda tutti, anche chi nasconde la testa sotto la sabbia.

Quindi, per favore, per quanto nell'immaginario "il Boss" abbia il suo fascino, non fatelo passare per quello incompreso, quello che alla fine fa del bene nonostante scavalchi la legge perchè così non fate che sputare su tutti i morti, così come fareste se scusereste gli artefici delle stragi nelle scuole o attentati di altro tipo.

Con questo non sto dicendo che in Italia dobbiamo fare attenzione ad ogni vicolo buio o simili (insomma, in quei casi si deve fare attenzione in ogni caso ovunque si è, ma non per via delle mafie). Il nostro è un paese meraviglioso con una storia e una cultura unici e introvabili da altre parti, così come tutte le culture di questo mondo; quindi, una volta finito questo casino col Covid19, venite pure a farvi un giro e a godervi le splendide città come Napoli, Roma, Torino, Firenze e Bologna o a vedere le meraviglie delle nostre alpi o spiagge.

Da fangirl e cosplayer adoro delle buone AU e la creazione di OC originali e accattivanti... ma l'importante è riuscire a distinguere la fantasia dalla realtà dei fatti.

So che non molti avranno letto tutto questo post e moltissimi l'avranno trovato pesante e palloso ma vi invito a fare delle ricerche, anche solo digitare su google "Strage di via D'Amelio" e "Strage di Capaci" che sono le più tristemente famose. Guardate le foto. Guardate come hanno distrutto strade per colpire un singolo uomo, in entrambi i casi. Poi potete tornate a fare cosplay e a scrivere e leggere fanfiction, ne avete tutto il diritto ma almeno lo farete con più consapevolezza.

I’ve been working a lot recently on one of my super not talked about OCs, Giorgio Marcello. He’s my OCs’ Giovanni and Vittoria’s older half brother, he’s in his early 40s. He’s spoiled rotten since he’s the product of their dad’s first marriage. He’s a celebrity plastic surgeon who works for the super powerful hospital/medicine megacorporation in my dystopian future and is known for his super cutting edge experimental boundary pushing cosmetic surgeries. He’s very charming and charismatic but he’s also very skeevy behind closed doors. He works with his twin brother Matteo who’s a cop to catch criminals and blackmail them into agreeing to being test subjects for his surgical experiments. He’s the one who built Angel Steel’s fake angel wings and grafted them into his flesh (they also had a sexual relationship until Angel ran away — he OFTEN fucks patients). He also frequently does cosmetic surgery experiments on himself and his look is always changing. Among other things, Giorgio grows human flesh for experiments but he also turns some of it into leather for fancy suits so he’s constantly wearing human-leather jackets and shit. I kinda associate him with Pete Burns and a liiiiittle bit Marilyn Manson LOL.

a few random hsp facts? yeagh.

- werewolves are not the only race in-universe. all sorts of creatures (and humans... ig...) live together in society.

- however, certain creatures are regional. werewolves are usually in the south of the us, vampires in the pnw, fairies and pixies in the northeast, you get the idea. (this is just for the us because that's where i live but it's different for other countries obviously)

- something character specific: matteo gets real bad separation anxiety, even if he's alone most of the time.

- ALSO... giovanni is a mechanic. i don't know if i mentioned that in his character bio, but he is. he gets like... really greasy. covers up his scent.

Uhm! There’s a lot to say, but I’ll keep it short for now since I tend to ramble 😔

Basics: Born in the mid/late 1700s in Florence, was embraced in the early 1800s, generation 8th to a Cappadocian sire (there are reasons 🕵️ why Matteo does not look like his typical cousins), was and currently is a practicing/professional coroner/undertaker, he enjoys taxidermy, vinyls, currently (in story early 2000s) has no greater knowledge on how to use electronic devices, is very blunt, and likes birds 🐦‍⬛
